its actually super easy just type in what you want to the search bar and it takes you to it
even settings has search bar to take you where you want to go …. it is really not hard at all just some screens look different

win 10 today is similar to win 7 and you and your wife will not see much diff but better performance if the hardware is not too old

I just did it on a win7 system for a client and it loaded no problem.... what else do you have running when you do the update not avg or Avast right ? …. ….. time for win10 I think ;)

when it fails what error code ? did you try going to the catalogue server and getting stand alone installer ?

go to support.dell.com plug in your service tag and let it detect drivers for you probably needs BIOS update to start there
you can also boot to the dell diags in your BIOS and make sure your hardware is not having issues
