Using a Windows disk, you do a FixMBR to recover from that type of situation. There are also 3rd party tools that will rebuild the MBR. I'm sure the Linux disks have something similar as well with GRUB, but I'm not familiar with it.

FixMBR is not 100% all the time. All I know is that M$ doesn't know other OS's and Filesystems exist besides itself and FAT/FAT32/NTFS. And I don't like to tempt fate. :o

FixMBR (Or fdisk /mbr for older versions) will work as advertised.

it's only use is to overwrite the MBR,


you would also need to ensure that any repartitioning that you do leaves windows in the primary partition of the primary drive.

but I've never run across a problem that I couldn't work around to fix that was anything other than overwriting the partition table.
