one thing i forgot to mention that i did...
i read somewhere that all other usb devices should be disconnected when creating the bootable USB drive
so the one diff may be that i had removed all other usb devices before creating this boot device

OK. The only other thing I have on either computer is an external HD. I will try that next.

As I mentioned this was a different drive that I used to install Ubuntu using my wife's computer.

IDK i have used that same USB stick on 3 other systems besides my laptop and not seeing any of what ur getting

Maybe it is the usb drives I have used. They are both hp. I will look around and see if I can find something else to try.

mine is just a cheap sandisk from radio shack IDK again i default to irrev on this one

I haven't tried running updates and am using a sandisk drive.

this shouldn't be linux related, unless some strange combination of motherboard chipset and usb is causing issues.

maybe try re-downloading the iso, or use something to verify the checksum of the file.. I downloaded mine via bittorrent so the download is verified.

also, the version of windows is really irrelevant too.
