If I'm using FB on my desktop I can see and read messages. If I'm on my android phone or tablet I can't use messenger without the app. I downloaded it on my phone but it seemed like a pain and I don't need video chat. Are there any other compatible apps that are lighter and less intrusive?

Everything connected to Facebook is intrusive. You can try Facebook Messenger Lite
